Chapel Hill Elementary School was abuzz with excitement on Monday, May 5th as Newbery Medalist and bestselling author Katherine Applegate visited to promote her latest picture book, Odder: An Otter's Story. The event was part of the school's "One Book, One District" initiative, which encourages the entire school community to read and engage with the same book simultaneously in partnership with Page Turners.

Applegate, renowned for her works such as The One and Only Ivan and Wishtree, captivated students with a reading of Odder, a heartwarming tale inspired by true events at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. The story follows Odder, a playful sea otter pup who, after a life-changing encounter with a shark, is rescued and learns the importance of community and compassion. The book is adapted from Applegate's bestselling middle-grade novel and is illustrated by Charles Santoso .

During her visit, Applegate shared insights into her writing process and the inspiration behind Odder. She emphasized the importance of storytelling in fostering empathy and understanding, particularly in young readers. Students had the opportunity to ask questions, engage in discussions about the book's themes, and participate in activities related to marine conservation. Mrs. Cameron Sheldon, the CHES media specialist stated, “It was a true joy to have such an amazing author in our media center sharing her love for storytelling with our young readers. This highlighted that readers really are leaders!”

The event was met with enthusiasm from both students and faculty, highlighting the school's commitment to promoting literacy and environmental awareness.
