Chapel Hill Elementary is proud to announce that we are a 2022-2023 National Beta School of Distinction. The school earned this recognition by increasing their club’s membership by at least 10% from last year. National Beta School of Distinction is an honor for Beta clubs striving towards academic achievement, exemplary character, demonstrated leadership and service to others. With an ongoing quest to instill these qualities in more students, the National Beta School of Distinction Award is designed to award those schools that show an increase in membership from the previous school year. This year, only 2,643 Beta Clubs across the country received this award. In a congratulatory letter to the school, Bobby Hart, CEO said “This national award speaks highly of your commitment to academic excellence and illustrates your dedication to preparing students for their future.” Award recipients will receive a National Beta School of Distinction banner to proudly display as a symbol of their accomplishment. About National Beta With more than 500,000 active members and 9,000 chapters nationally and internationally, National Beta has become the nation’s largest independent, non-profit, educational youth organization. National Beta recognizes outstanding achievement, promotes character and social responsibility, encourages service involvement to school and community, and fosters leadership skills. National Junior Beta includes grades 4-8 and National Senior Beta includes grades 9-12. The National Beta program offers over $300,000 annually to its Senior Beta Members. School Choice Application
04/14/2023
The Douglas County School System will begin accepting applications for School Choice Transfers April 12 through April 27, 2023. Parents may request to transfer their child to another public school in the district for the upcoming 2023-2024 school year if the school has available space after its assigned students have been enrolled. Available classroom space is defined as permanent classroom space and does not include the use of trailers. The Douglas County School System considers factors such as projected enrollment, maximum class size and available teacher allocations when determining available space. Class size capacity is also considered by grade level and subject. For a list of schools with openings, please click here. Interested parents may complete an application online. The link to the online application will be available here. Applications will not be available for pick up from the Douglas County Board of Education building. All applications must be received by 11:59 p.m. on Thursday, April 27, 2023. Please note, you must receive an order number. Failure to receive this order number will result in your application not being completed. Please make sure that all information is entered correctly. Should the Douglas County School System receive more applications than seats available at an individual school, an electronic lottery will be held on May 5, 2023. School Choice slots are not filled on a first come first serve basis. Parents and legal guardians who elect the School Choice option are responsible for all costs associated with transporting the child to and from school. The Douglas County School System will not provide transportation. For athletics, middle school and high school students transferring under School Choice are subject to the eligibility requirements of the Middle School Conference By-Laws or the Georgia High School Association (GHSA). Middle school students granted a transfer to another middle school will be eligible to participate in athletics as long as they meet the academic and age requirements as established by the Middle School Conference By-Laws. High school students, other than incoming freshman, will be ineligible for varsity competition for one calendar year from the date of the transfer but can participate in 9th grade and junior varsity athletics as long as they meet the academic and age requirements as established by the Georgia High School Association (GHSA). If a student transfers back to their districted school, he/she will be ineligible once again for varsity competition for one calendar year from the date of the transfer. Parents/Guardians will be notified through the Scriborder dashboard, the transfer request website, regarding your child’s School Choice status. All applications must be received by 11:59 p.m. on Thursday, April 27, 2023. Should you have additional questions, please visit the dcssga.org website (Departments, Student Services, School Choice) here or call Student Services at 770-651-2084.

Flex Friday Fun!
01/27/2023
As part of our Flex Friday rotations, the students in Kindergarten - Fifth grade at CHES are learning about the states of matter and what causes matter to change from one state to another. The lesson begins with the students listening to the book, Snowmen all year. In this book, the little boy wants to play with his snowman all year. The students are asked if they thought the boy could make a house that would allow the snowman to be around all year. They are challenged with figuring out which material would make the best insulated house for the snowman's house. In order to solve the problem, the students conducted an experiment to determine which material would be the best insulator. They chose 3 materials that they thought would be the best and wrapped an ice cube in each. They were then placed in a zip lock bag. They made predictions as to which material would be the best. After 30 minutes the ice cues were unwrapped and the best insulator was determined by how big the ice cubes were and how much water was present in the bags.

Stock Market Game 2022
01/09/2023
A group of Chapel Hill Elementary fifth grade PC students took 4 th place (out of 52 teams) in the Douglas County Fall Stock Market Game, a ten-week, online simulation of real-world stock trading sponsored by the Georgia Council on Economic Education. Team members Shaun Hurley, Abbey Swanson, E’Lycia Manuel, and Journee Hill turned their $100,000 initial investment into $113,184.35! Prior to participating in the competition, students learned about all things economics: supply and demand, profit and loss, competition, risk, how to read a stock table, and how to research investments. It is safe to say these hard-working students know how a market economy functions in today's society. Chapel Hill Elementary has some savvy investors, and we are so very proud of their tremendous success!

Readers Inspiring Readers
09/11/2022
Reading is key to everything in life. There are few 21st century jobs that cannot be performed without strong reading skills. Therefore, reading instruction and the love of reading is something that we strive to instill in our students while they are young. Mrs. Cameron Sheldon, the media specialist at Chapel Hill Elementary School, asked teachers to help inspire our young readers. Mrs. Sheldon stated, "I run my media center around the idea that readers are truly leaders, therefore I thought it would be inspiring to ask the leaders in our building----our teachers and staff to share books that are meaningful to them." Mrs. Sheldon featured this display on our morning green-screen newscast and they're flying off the shelf! The students are delighted to read books that are recommended by their current or even former teachers. Readers are Truly Leaders!

Chapel Hill Elementary Students Interview the Douglasville Mayor
05/29/2022
Chapel Hill Elementary fifth grade Cheetah News Network (CNN) news crew members, under the direction of Media Specialist and News Crew Advisor, Mrs. Cameron Sheldon, were selected to be part of a city of Douglasville initiative aimed to highlight extraordinary student news crews within the Douglas County School System. The CNN anchors and producers had the opportunity to work alongside Douglasville Jr’s anchors and producers! CHES was selected to interview Douglasville Mayor Rochelle Robinson. This was a thrilling experience for all involved. This partnership presented students with an opportunity to showcase their public speaking skills, ability to maintain their composure under pressure, their poise on camera, and their dynamic leadership skills. The students were able to put into practice the themes learned in social studies by displaying civic responsibility. Students were asked to make split-second decisions and adjust to the energy of the interview and respond in real-time with journalistic integrity. Zion Warford-Cooper and Sophia Pimiento interviewed Mayor Robinson and the questions ranged from who inspired her to the title of her favorite book. The inspiring news anchors sparkled on camera. Other members of the crew assisted with production and filming duties during the interview. Chapel Hill Elementary was honored to be a part of this dynamic event.

STEAM is FUN!

Students in Ms. Mack's class had a sensory experience of creating super textured slime!! So how do you create textured slime, you ask? You'll need a bowl, a spoon, glitter glue, baking soda, contact lens solution and a few beads. This activity reinforced student's ability to plan, create, follow directions, match and sequence events as well as manipulate various textures. Students reviewed the steps paired with an illustration to know which steps to follow. Then, students placed the correct illustrated steps in order on their sequencing recipe chart before creating their slime. Between the beads, the glitter and the many textures - this activity was a STEAM sensory explosion! So much fun, Ms. Mack's class!
